Disable 'Nickname' field in Online Enrollment
Is it possible to disable the "Nick Name" (First Name Alias) Field in Aeries Online Enrollment?
Thank you for your feedback, and please tell us more. Why would you not want to collect the student’s nickname? Please use the comments to elaborate.

When printing transcripts the nick names are printed on the transcript. So we see BooBoo, or JJ on a transcript in parentheses.

Hi Kevin - is there an update to this idea? Would love to see this implemented as it's quite a bit of data cleanup when parents enter family nicknames. Thanks

Maybe "prefered name" rather than nickname.

Parents entering in a nickname of Joey when the student's name is Joseph is great. However, many parents enter nicknames such as Pumpkin, Han Han, and Munchie. This is just data clean-up for us. Please allow districts to disable this field in Online Enrollment. Thank you.

re-label the field or mouseover to read, "Other name that your child goes by i.e.. Michael goes by Mike"

Maybe instead of disabling the nickname field in Online Enrollment, just add a new field in demographics for nickname, seperate from Alias or Legal, that doesn't get reported to CALPADS.

Legal names are reported to CALPADS and used for testing in TOMS. Legal names have to be used on the transcript for college applications. We work hard to ensure that our data is clean and accurate. It would be nice to have the option to turn this feature on or off in the Aeries Air admin settings.

The nickname goes into the Alias field, which we use for name changes, like adoptions. We have changed our procedures for legal names and legal name changes since we submitted this request. We would like the option in Aeries Air admin to turn on or off adding nicknames.

Sometimes the nickname is not caught by the enrollment secretary, because the parent/guardian reads nickname vs alias, other name used. When it is caught it usually has already been reported to CALPADS.

Once a parent inputs "Stinky Butt" as a child's nickname, the field loses all credibility. Better to have the child inform the teacher of a preferred nickname, which can then be related to the school office.

I noticed issues with CalPads reporting. When the parent only puts in the First alias, it threw errors stating the last alias was missing so my secretaries had to go in and fill in the other fields

My support for this idea originally had to do with testing. We used to create a report showing the students with aliases so the teachers knew who may need additional support logging in to TOMS (i.e. Sadie needs to login with her legal name of Xochitl). The excessive use of the field by parents rendered it useless for testing purposes though, so we recently abandoned that practice. This item is no longer a priority for us.

Once they reach the high school level there should be a transition to proper use of name for college or scholarship applications, financial aid and any other use for their school records. Using Junior, Mamas, Buddy, Bubs at the high school level may cause delays.

We have noticed that the "nicknames" that parents have been inputting are often cutesy family nicknames. One example, is a child named Sadie, the parent inputted "Sadie-Bug" for a nickname. Maybe change the field name to other another name, such as "Other name that your child goes by" eg. Timothy goes by Tim. We like to keep the Aeries database "clean" and when we saw what was being inputted by parents, it was not useful or helpful.
