Allow Custom R-Codes (e.g., R5, R6) for Summer School Course Types to Allow Differentiation for GPA Weight Factors
Some districts use the "Course Type" field to help calculate GPA by assigning different weights to courses like honors or dual credit. At the same time, state reporting requires that "Course Type R" be used to identify summer school or other courses taken outside the regular school year. This creates a conflict—districts can’t use "R" for state reporting purposes without interfering with GPA setup if they use the CourseType option.
To solve this, we’re requesting that state reporting be updated to recognize any Course Type that begins with "R"(such as R5 or R6). This would allow districts to meet state reporting rules while still customizing GPA weights for different types of courses.
Hello, this work item has been completed and was released on 8/19/25. Here are the relevant revision notes:
- Texas Ed-Fi: The CourseTranscriptExt entity has been updated to evaluate the Summer School Indicator for courses completed during the summer months between school years where the Course Type for the course is 'R' or a code that begins with 'R' to send a value of 'true' in the JSON record. This adjustment has been made to allow 'R' courses to be identified for state reporting, while also allowing the District GPA Configuration to distinguish between weight factors if the Course Type field is used in the District GPA setup.
