User Font Preference Setting for Accessibility and Readability
Aeries displays all text in a single fixed font, and users have no way to adjust the typeface to suit their visual needs. Staff and parents with vision impairments, dyslexia, or general readability difficulties rely on browser or operating system workarounds that are inconsistent and often not available on managed district devices. Aeries needs a user preference setting that allows each user to select a display font from a curated list of open source fonts designed for legibility, such as Atkinson Hyperlegible, which was engineered specifically for readers with low vision. Supported fonts would be bundled with Aeries under the Open Font License and delivered through standard browser font support, so no installation would be required on the user’s device. As a suggested design, the preference could offer two separate selections: a Display Font for labels, headings, and descriptions, and a Data Font for any field a user can view or edit, allowing users to choose a highly legible font for reading while keeping a font with clearly distinguished characters for data entry. The default experience would remain unchanged for users who do not select a preference. This idea is related to the separate request to use a font with distinguishable characters for user entered data, and the two can be considered independently.
