Flex Scheduling Advisement Classes
Advisement meets for 26 minutes/weekly. Currently, we randomly assign students to an advisor for two years. Most of the students do not have the teacher as an actual teacher and building relationships and trust can be especially hard between advisor and student when they only see each other once/week for 26 minutes.
We would like to be able to assign students to an Advisement teacher who they actually have for one of their Period 1-6 classes. At Sierra Vista, we have the cohort model and we schedule academic cohorts more easily thanks to Team Group Number in Aeries. Students are assigned to an academic team of four teachers for 7th grade plus an elective and PE teacher. For 8th grade, they are assigned to two of the same teachers they had in 7th grade, two new teachers, plus an elective and PE teacher.
To have a greater community, opportunity for relationship building, and improved safety and wellness measures in place, we need to be able to easily assign students to an Advisement teacher they have in periods 1-6. Currently, there are significant limitations because we are not able to do this.
Our school of 1300 students is negatively impacted as a result. Additionally, when I talk with my middle and high school colleagues in Irvine Unified about this issue, many others would also appreciate a solution for this.
A solution would positively impact thousands of students.
