Or to archive the records and remove from available inventory totals. That is very deceiving unless the item is deleted, but then you also lose the history.

100% agreed. Please, please set this up as soon as possible. It is time consuming and a huge waste of time to individually delete each item before an asset record can be removed. I fail to understand why this option is not available.
