   It would be a GREAT idea to allow a special grade like NTI for "not turned in" or NS for "not submitted". If I leave the box blank, parents always ask me if their kids can still turn in late work. If I put a zero, parents see it as the student getting a zero score on an assignment that the student supposedly turned in. It does not register as missing assignment. NTI would be the best solution to this problem.
